Description:
Formaldehyde is a gas that is commonly sold in the form of water solutions ranging in concentration from 37 to 52 wt % formaldehyde. Some contain a polymerization inhibitor. All are colorless, with a sharp characteristic "formaldehyde" odor.

Product Uses

Formaldehyde reacts with phenol, urea, melamine or resorcinol to form formaldehyde resins that are used as plywood adhesives and particleboard binders. This is the largest single use of the product.
Formaldehyde is also converted to
polyacetal (POM) resins;
methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI), a raw material for polyurethanes;
pentaerythritol and trimethylolpropane, raw materials for alkyd resins and synthetic lubricants;
paraformaldehyde, a low polymer containing >91% HCHO, with uses essentially the same as those of formaldehyde.
