Uses
Vinyl acetate homopolymer emulsions and vinyl acrylic copolymer
emulsions
are base resins for water-based paints, adhesives, paper coatings and textile finishes. (Emulsion polynmers
are also called latexes or dispersions.)
Vinyl acetate ethylene copolymer
emulsions (with relatively large percentages of vinyl acetate) have similar uses.
Ethylene
vinyl acetate solid copolymers (with relatively small percentages of vinyl acetate) are used as hot
melt adhesives and coatings.
Vinyl acetate is a raw material for ethylene
vinyl alcohol polymers, which because of their excellent barrier properties are used to make flexible
food packaging films and liners for automobile gas tanks.
Vinyl acetate
is also a raw material for polyvinyl alcohol, which is a component of adhesives and paints and is also
a raw material for polyvinyl butyral. PVB resin forms the transparent adhesive film that bonds layers
of "safety glass" together. The consumer products upon which PVB use depends are therefore
automobile windshields and the windows of commercial buildings.
