Product Uses
Approximately a third of the methanol consumed is converted to methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE), a gasline additive. Another third is converted to formaldehyde, and about a tenth is converted to acetic acid. Other methanol derivatives are methyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate and methylamines. Methanol is a component of resin solvents and deicing fluids, and it is used as an antifreeze agent in natural gas pipelines.
